You are quite right. There's very little chance that I'll stay with the project long after 3.0beta1 hits the download mirrors. But this is exactly the beauty of the open-source development: if a system has a self-correcting system of control (community of users and contributors in our case) it will remain viable. There will always be some stepping in to ensure that HttpClient development goes on.
