IMO isReadable() returning true for properties which throw an exception when
getProperty() is called is a bug - so I don't agree with Simon that we need to
retain backward compatibility - bugs just need to be fixed.
I have changes ready to commit for this, but I'll hold off to allow for
comments/objections before committing anything.
