I agree on a fundamental level, but .. it comes with a pretty big complexity
cost for the average user. Editing a file is going to be significantly easier
than learning a whole set of commands that they (and, frankly, the vast
majority of committers!) barely know exist.
That said, nothing is preventing this particular issue being solved multiple
ways.
