I find "hadoop jar" useful for running standalone tests against Hadoop classes.
For example, you can run
https://github.com/cmccabe/jni_based_unix_groups_mapping_test with {{hadoop
jar}}.
Any time you want to run a standalone program against HDFS, you easily can do
it with {{hadoop jar}}. I agree that we should not be recommending its use for
MR jobs and so forth, but is there really a need to remove it?
