We do a lot of stuff in init time; making this all lazy/async eval is not 
trivial. It will also delay the time at which problem surface until much later.

I am not saying that it can't be done but it would take work -you don't just 
have to make the operation async, every public API will need to be extended to 
possibly block for the operation to complete, and to propagate any failure. We 
could *maybe* hide this in checkOpen calls, but still...
