Steve Loughran commented on HADOOP-15135:
-----------------------------------------
[Aws object
tags|http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/object-tagging.html]
Arguments for:
* distcp likes it, makes write-then-recover possible
* lossless
Arguments against:
* without directory entries, you can't preserve directory permissions
* could set up unrealistic expectations about security permissions actually
working
* although you can get back PUT-time headers on a HEAD request, you have to
issue another HTTP request to get tags
* would need a lazy on-demand permissions populator for FileStatus, as local
FS does, except it now the cost could actually have a network round trip and a
failure: very expensive.

> Azure wasb supports get/set permissions (for persistence only) to help round
> trip distcp operations.
> Could aws tags be used similarly?
