Steve Loughran commented on HADOOP-14647:
-----------------------------------------

HADOOP-9991 never goes away, it's the eternal "carefully update things" task,
And [~ajisakaa] has been wonderful in suffering there. It's work which never
gets the headlines, nobody stands up at a keynote and says "and we've updated
jackson to 2.7.8!", but when it goes wrong, well, everyone notices.

One problem we've always had is the "breaking downstream code" problem...I hope
now there's more shading life is better, but it's still good to tread carefully
to avoid upset HBase, Hive, Spark, Flink teams

The ones' I'm mostly scared of are: jackson, ZK, jetty, guava, curator; nice to
see they are not on the list yet. jsp-api may be tied to jersey, so tread
carefully there.

anything with JNI is hard too: leveldb can only be updated in sync with spark,
as it tries to uses leveldb for its in-NM shuffle service

> There are a bunch of old third-party dependencies in trunk. Before we get to
> the final release candidate, it would be good to move some of these
> dependencies to the latest (or at least the latest compatible)
> , since it could be a while before the next update.
