JEP 223 (http://openjdk.java.net/jeps/223) details the format of the version
string, including the java.version property.
As Uwe reports, this code fragment in Hadoop works almost by accident with
"9-ea". The "ea" component is the pre-release identifier (or $PRE) in JEP 223
and this has now been dropped because JDK 9 is close to its first GA candidate
build.
