omitting jackson doesn't seem to cause problems, as hadoop common pulls it and 
*.jar in.

I'm almost tempted to mark hadoop-common as "provided" here (and the other 
object stores?), just to simplify the life of everyone pulling in the JAR and 
jumping through hoops to exclude all that transient cruft
