Allen Wittenauer commented on HADOOP-13691:
-------------------------------------------
bq. What I'm curious about is whether this information is verifiable.
For non-ASF builds, the answer doesn't really matter. It's helpful to the
community to have this information as part of the build. Removing it would be
very anti-community. For ASF builds, we can do some things to make it
verifiable if that's actually a concern. (e.g., require that the PGP key being
used to sign matches [email protected])
Just to be clear: I don't care about the web UIs. No one I know actually uses
them for admin work anyway (too slow, too cluttered, lack key information, not
programmable, APIs aren't stable, etc, etc), especially after 2.4 nuked the
hell out of HDFS. But yanking it from 'hadoop version' is a terrible idea.
It's key information.

> Currently in the namenode UI as well as the resource manager UI, we display
> the date of the build as well as the user id of the person who built it.
> Although other bits of information is useful (e.g. git commit it, branch,
> etc.), the value of the build date and user is suspect. We should consider
> removing them from the visible UI.
