Binary formats are pretty useless without tools written to actually process
them. So to me, the #1 requirement here is that the standard sysadmin toolkit
needs to be usable here, e.g., grep. Being a fixed field format was one of the
absolute keys to success of the HDFS audit log and one of the reasons why
people still use it over other solutions like the weirdo notification thing.
With that in mind, if JSON is really wanted, then it needs to get printed on a
single line.
