Duo Zhang commented on HADOOP-12910:
------------------------------------

And some background here.

In HBASE-14790, we have implemented a {{FanOutOneBlockAsyncDFSOutput}} which
performs much better than the {{DFSOutputStream}} for the WAL in HBase. We want
to push the code back into HDFS.

And also, I have done some work on the HTTP/2 DTP, in HDFS-7966. The HTTP/2 DTP
also needs the asynchronous API to expose its power(as tested in HDFS-7966, it
can not perform better than the original implementation under a blocking
scenario).

This is the reason why I'm interested in this topic.

Thanks.

> Add a new API, namely FutureFileSystem (or AsynchronousFileSystem, if it is a
> better name). All the APIs in FutureFileSystem are the same as FileSystem
> except that the return type is wrapped by Future, e.g.
> {code}
>   //FileSystem
>   public boolean rename(Path src, Path dst) throws IOException;
>   //FutureFileSystem
>   public Future<Boolean> rename(Path src, Path dst) throws IOException;
> {code}
> Note that FutureFileSystem does not extend FileSystem.
