I think my preference would be to leave it out. We had many of these extension points in Vorbis (transform type, floor type, residue type, mapping type, window type), and there were never any conflicts. Having an explicit "255 == unidentified" mapping is already more machinery than Vorbis had. Let's not invent more complications we don't know we need.
