Hi,  Many, many years ago I retightened the nuts toerails since several were
loose. I replaced all of them with Nyloc nuts using a 1/4 in. rachet with a
few extensions/universal joints and short-long sockets. With my son holding a
scredriver on top I torqued all of them ( not too tight ). 15 years later none
had loosened.
I you realy need to replace the butyl, kerosene ( maybe varsol ) is the solvent
of choice ( also good for old duct tape glue that dried under the sun ).

As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing better than good butyl tape for this
and other deck sealing purposes, and nothing is better than Bed-It brand butyl.
It may be hard to find, but most closely compares to the original stuff used by
C&C that is still sticky and soft after 40 years.

Hello all,
Firefly is a 1977 C&C 29 Mk1 and I have a handful of annoying toe rail leaks as
well as some areas of the hull / deck where there is a fairly large amount of
the original butyl sealant oozed out. Likely not all of it but enough to be
impressive.
So while snugging up the nuts will no doubt help, we will be pulling some of
the just plain loose toe rail screws to clean, goop and replace/ retighten.
Which brings me to the questions.
Any suggestions on goop?Wrapped butyl tape?4200?Life caulk?Others?
And any secret method/experiences to help keep the project from becoming a
goopy mess?
(Caulking of most kinds seems to hate me)
Thanks in advance for the input.
Respectfully, Karl
