It's simple, the default path you have at the command line is not the
same as inside CMUCL. It's best to put the full path in for most
coding, as you note that works. cron jobs, popups in graphical apps
require similar full pathing.
I think that you can set some sort of default pathing into your
running Lisp, but it's probably more work that supplying full pathing
