I have updated this example here (https://github.com/yatesco/om-tut) so that it 
works with the latest releases (Clojure 1.6.0, react 0.11.1 and om 
0.8.0-alpha1).

The problem was that IE was going into compatibility mode. Adding the (not 
official - woot) HTML5 doctype works.

Clone the repo, check it out in IE8 and everything is fine.
