It's a convention that dynamic vars have "hearmuffs". (def ^:dynamic *foo*) Not everyone uses it, and the earmuffs themselves have no meaning to clojure. (I think in some older clojure version (1.1?), vars with earmuffs were automatically made dynamic, but that long ago.)
