While I think Clojure is an impressive achievement, I would not have thought that the Clojure compiler (or Lisp compilers in general) would be interesting for a post-grad student to work on. After all, Lisps are known for their simple syntax and grammar, and Clojure compiles to Java byte codes, so presumably the Clojure compiler does not include an optimizer.
