Hello Rich, I know this is an old post, but did you consider using Terracotta (http://www.terracotta.org/) for clustering Clojure? It might fit the Clojure concurrency model much better than MPI, and you wouldn't have to mix Java with Erlang (or any other external technologies). You can already cluster other JVM based programming languages like JRuby (http://jonasboner.com/2007/02/05/clustering-jruby-with-open- terracotta/) or Scala (http://jonasboner.com/2008/01/25/clustering- scala-actors-with-terracotta/).
