Hi Emmanuel,

think abaout a big network with different types (ATM, Ethernet ...). The
normal way to manage the network is to use snmp or telnet or... over the
same way like user data. But when the the network crashed (a core router
goes down and you can't reach the devices because their have your own
segment an your management station is in another segment) --- you have a
problem. With outband management you can reached the network component over
terminal servers or modems (depend your outband management design and
independ of your instable network) an you have a easy look to the routers
problem. But if the router is dead your outband management are your legs
and your laptop ;-)
