NoQ added a comment. Ok whew that's a big patch! I *think* I found a couple of bugs. In any case, this code is quickly becoming very complicated, and the functions we're editing are rapidly growing out of control. Chopping them up into smaller functions with clear separation of concerns would probably help the reader a lot 😅
