I don't buy the argument of "frontend projects have consistently run into problems related to this", I think this is not a good justification for this change. But this change seems like it can be motivated without this argument. I also have been trying to help brainstorming alternatives just to see if we could get something that would fit what Matt is looking to achieve while getting past @rjmccall concerns, not because I am against this change.
