Just a note on db_slots, I don’t think it has ever worked properly, and last time I checked it still wasn’t implemented (https://www.spinics.net/lists/ceph-users/msg83189.html). This option should probably be entirely removed from the docs, unless it’s coming soon.

but I'm passing it through to a ceph VM, so ceph doesn't see its full character).

That layer does impact performance, but you can use a udev rule to override the kernel’s rotational attribute on the device if you feel it’s faster than an HDD, which will influence certain Ceph option settings.
