Why should XML be the default? Why should XML even be used?

Currently manager output is deliberately pretty simple and easy to
parse. That format has to stay because of the indeterminate number of
existing clients that already depend on it.

So what is the driver for XML and why, and how, should the core support
conversion between the existing simple format and XML?
