The Open Source Business Alliance has started a new initiate to improve OOXML support in open source office suites, the "Precise reproduction of OOXML documents in Open Source Office applications" project:

The press release specifically mentions LibreOffice and OpenOffice.org, but there may be an opportunity for Calligra to get involved if you make a good case for it. Since funding as available, it may at least be worth checking on.
