Hi!
KOffice used to be a member of the Dutch OpenDoc society, and Calligra has just
been invited. The cost is negligable at a very fair 0 euros for open source
projects... And I would really like us to join! Any objections?

Hi Boudewijn,
I don't know who to talk to within the Calligra Suite project about
this, but
we would love to sign Calligra Suite up as organisational member. Today
we'll be
announcing the membership of the Document Foundation to OpenDoc Society,
and that means you guys are the obvious one missing.
I guess you know, but if you have to forward this to other people:
OpenDoc Society brings together individuals and organisations with
a stake or interest in the openness and future of documents to learn from
each other and share knowledge - about core technologies, available tools,
policy issues, transition strategies, legal aspects and of course the
latest
innovations. OpenDocSociety.org brings developers, publishers, decision
makers,
educators, vendors, IT managers, academics, writers, archivists and users
together with interesting like-minded people to learn from and cooperate
with.
Other organisational members are quite diverse, from the Netherlands
department of defense to vendors like Google, IBM, CWI, KOffice, Bull,
Ubuntu,
O3 spaces, organisations for the blind, etc. A complete list can be
found here:
http://www.opendocsociety.org/organisation/organisational-members-of-opendoc-society
As open source project you pay 0 euro, (including unlimited free
memberships).
Below an overview of activities over the last year.
Best,
Michiel
-----------
Dear members,
the last year saw a lot of activity for OpenDoc Society. We have
argued about ODF and other best practises for Office users in many
places, including a special hearing in the Danish parliament. We
have organised two ODF plugfests, one in Brussels and one at the
University of Granada [1]. The Officeshots.org project we've created
together with the Netherlands government is growing, and now provides
everyone a good opportunity to test and validate their documents in a
number of different products simultaneously. [2] The Officeshots.org
project also provides useful standalone tools such as OfficeConvert, so
that users of Microsoft Office can batch convert their legacy documents
[3].
Our renewed website is offering information on available tools for
developers to work with ODF in many programming languages - from Java,
C++ and C# to scripting languages such as ruby, python and perl [4].
We've contributed a proposal for the renewal of ODF track changes to
OASIS and ISO/IEC JTC1 SC34 wg 6, which has resulted in the establishment
of a new subcommittee on Advanced Document Collaboration within the ODF
TC. [5]
But of course much of last years activities were a precursor to what
awaits us in 2011. Because ODF 1.2. is now done with its final public
review, which was due January 1st 2011 - today [7]. Soon the wait
will be over. The OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications
(OpenDocument) TC has worked hard for over four years on this
specification, and its publication will again be a major step for
interoperability. In the five years since the publication of ODF 1.0 as a
standard OpenDocument Format has meanwhile become a mainstream technology,
available in virtually all products. ODF 1.2 will increase the usability
and
use of ODF even further. We of course aim at endlessly improving the user
experience, sharpening interoperability and helping you to profit from
supporting technologies in 2011 as well.
Thank you for your membership. We wish you a wonderful and very productive
2011, and we hope to continue working with you successfully for many years
to come!
