For my workflow, using a submodule or having a copy of the code is quite a big 
difference.

You are right, that the method is tracking all information about the used 
versions. But in my oppinion, they are a lot harder to access compared to 
submodules.

For me, submodules usually work very stable. So I wouldn't say that they cause 
a lot of issues. Of course you have to know how they work. But you have to know 
the procedure that you suggested too, so I don't see a big difference.
