Chris Johns started a new discussion:

This change remove the `7` tool prefix and that would bring a lot of churn as
well as breaking the promise of compatibility across releases. Sure the major
version number changes across releases but that will be scripted by now. I can
see this removes all numbers but are we sure we want that? I am not sure I am.

To date the only files in `rtems/config` and directories and global support and
I like that.

Is `edge` gcc-14 or something else? I cannot tell from the patch review? My
proposal was `edge` is the bleeding edge of gcc, binutils etc and `next` is
gcc-14.

Can we keep `7` with this change and look at the change to remove `7` as
separate step?
