Is there a free Perl compiler? What I found in a quick search looked more like packaging and conversion to byte code without much promise of processing speed up.
This would be a compromise between the expressiveness desired for maintenance and end user performance. --joel Karl Berry <k...@freefriends.org> wrote: Well, I am not much of a fan of C++, but I recognize your arguments, and anyway, all that doesn't matter one way or another. What matters is what someone is willing to actually write and maintain. Patrice was willing to put in the (enormous amount of) work necessary to create a new implementation and hundreds of tests for the finicky details to keep it essentially compatible with the C makeinfo. If he had wanted to write it in C++/Java/whatever, then I would have been ok with that, in principle. Anyway, even with being able to use his work as a starting point, it's not even close to a GSoC project, in my mind. Or anything to be undertaken without a serious, long-term commitment. Even with Patrice's long-time previous experience with texi2html, it took years. So, ultimately, I have no better answer than what I already said :(. k
