PE> Tar just happens to look at them when they are empty. Well the archive created sure has a lot of their content. od -c will prove it to you. Alas, their file size is recorded as 0, so they go in to the archive, but you can't get them back out except by hacking. Anyway, what is the point of storing their contents if you don't provide a way to then extract them.
