FYI, I've proposed the same patch several years ago, and we have it applied in Feodra and RHEL for some time: https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2012-02/msg00007.html After several pings :) I stopped re-proposing the patch, because I started to have a feeling this is not 100% proper fix, but I don't really remember why :(.
