Follow-up Comment #1:
There isn't any such thing as an "implicit variable" in GNU Make. The name of
the documentation section you refer to is _Variables Used by Implicit Rules_
Although LD is set with a default value of "ld", the LD variable not used in
any implicit rule defined by GNU Make, so it doesn't work in that section.
