Hi Paolo.  Thanks for these patches, they do look interesting.

I'll need to think about the hash patches: the hash implementation in
GNU make is taken pretty straightforwardly from id-utils.  If we start
to modify it significantly here we'd be cutting that relationship.  That
may be OK, but I'd need to think about it.

These changes are significant enough that I think they'll require
copyright assignment paperwork.  I see that you already have assignments
on file for a number of GNU projects: if you're willing to assign
copyright for these changes to GNU make let me know, and if you need
paperwork let me know that as well.
