The code paths are entirely different on Linux and Windows, and so I'd
expect a behavior difference there. Red herring. As far as the difference
between two very similar Linux configurations (see my most recent response
to Paul), I can't yet explain that: both Linux, both glibc-2.23, and both
ext4.

That will be my next step: having an ltrace from Paul's setup would reduce
the search space by helping me pinpoint where the behavior diverges.
