Follow-up Comment #10:
In Git I've implemented the use of pselect() for systems which support it,
which is most modern systems (it was added to POSIX in 2001 or so). Also many
more system calls in GNU make have been changed to use the EINTR loop to
avoid problems with SIGCHLD, for systems that don't support pselect().
I think I'll close this as a duplicate of bug #46261
