Right, and again it's documented that if you use := and do it at the top of
the makefile it's guaranteed to work. But we don't need to argue; if you want
to add a new macro go ahead, I just wanted to make sure you did so knowing
that there's a stable, documented, supported solution which works for most if
not all use cases.
