If anyone has a moment to take a look at bug 36844, I would appreciate some feedback as to whether this is a valid bug or not.
I've been told the workaround I came up with is acceptable for now if it's definitely a bug in gmake, but if it's not a legitimate bug then I need to come up with a different solution to the problem.
