Notice that this is condition and not expressions.
Sample:
havefile := $(if $(wildcard myfile.c), YES, NO)
$(warning HAVEFILE=$(HAVEFILE))
This will print
HAVEFILE=NO
if no myfile.c exist (because the $(wildcard myfile.c) expands to an empty
string
