Follow-up Comment #1, bug #17740 (project make):

I, too, have seen this problem when automatically building and
including dependency makefiles (for C++ headers). I'd really like to
see it resolved. The silent failure can cause users to lose a lot of
time since there are no hints what is wrong when running make
normally.  Users have to use "make -d" and search for "Failed to
remake target file" and "Giving up on target file", assuming they
notice the non-zero exit status indicating that the build failed. I
think I'm gonna have a tough time selling this workaround to the many
casual users around my office that I'm trying to get to use GNU Make.
