Follow-up Comment #10, bug #14684 (project make): Yes. I tracked the problem down to the locale definition file for iso_8859_1, in which the character class blank is defined as:
blank <space>;<no-break-space> Of the non-unicode locales, iso_8859_1 seems to be the only one broken in this respect (I haven't checked the unicode locales).
