Hm. Try changing line 1440 in main.c to this:
(void) define_variable ("CURDIR", 6, current_directory, o_file, 0);
(change the "o_default" parameter to "o_file"). That should work.
It's a bit odd; perhaps this variable was badly named. It should have
been ".CURDIR", probably. That would have avoided most of these
issues.
Oh well, too late now! :-).
