I'm confident this is an instance of bug # 1517, which has been fixed in the source and for which there is a patch on the Savannah site (attached to this bug).
When you say that it appears that "the CVS source doesn't appear to fix this issue" is this because you've tried it and it doesn't, or just that you've looked at the code and it doesn't look different?
