I don't know if "make" provides a quoting mechanism. And since the offending "=" appears inside a string generated by a "pwd" that is invoked inside the makefile, it would be hard to apply. However, as someone else noted, Linux 2.6's build system seems to have avoided the problem a different way. It would probably be a significant improvement if the documentation was updated to match the current reality, though.
