strangeness about variable inside the shell

it looks strange that the variable in the shell doesn't work with builtin function. following is one of the situation:   list = foo/bar google deep/deeper/deepest test:         for item in $(list); do \                 echo $(notdir $$item); \         done result ?   foo/bar google deep/deeper/deepest   i had expected to be listed it as 'bar google deepest' but it showed as it was. my gmake version is 3.79.1. any comments or help will be appreciated.
