Well, so you won't be making your changes available until you make a
release? If you do put them on the net, perhaps I can find a way around
without messing it up. :) I'm already acquainted with read.c (which isn't
a very difficult code as you know) so it shouldn't be impossible for
me to at least have a look at it and understand what you're doing.
Perhaps you could make it available as an "unstable" branch or something
on the CVS, if working in the open does not bother you.
