This has been found and fixed in the sources a while ago (although it
was originally reported as a problem with strip and the Gnome sources, I
believe). There's a report in the bug database (see the README file)
and a partial patch which may or may not address your usage; the actual
fix I made was much more wide-ranging.
If you want to become a pretester, there's a pretest of make 3.79.1
which just has some bug/portability fixes, including this one, but no
new features. I already have a few minor changes needed to it, so that
won't be the actual 3.79.1, but you can check and see if it fixes your
problems.
