GNOME Shell is not supported by Debian GNU/Hurd. The only available DE are
Xfce, LXDE and MATE

Added to this, although Debian install lightdm by default, this DM doesn't
works. The only DM which currently works is XDM.
Alternatively you can start the DE using startx command from the tty.

In this case, you have to execute fsck without unmount. If lucky, during
booting, the system enter in recovery mode unmounting the filesystem to
execute fsck.
