I'd recommend using a larger image (some qemu image types can actually grow on demand), as 3 GB is barely enough for a small system, let alone the repositories and builds you'll have to store there when doing development. As a data point, one of my VMs has a 20 GB "disk" and I'm still running into disk space problems occasionally (but then I'm working with OpenJDK, the builds and build dependencies of which are quite large).
