The ancient version of Automake is very likely the problem.  How do you
happen to have such an old version of Automake installed, but nearly the
freshest one of Autoconf?  In case you're using Debian or a derivative,
installing the `automake1.9' or even (if already available)
`automake1.10' package would be the thing to do.  Please try that first,
before I start poking through the files you sent me.
