You've actually tried to run Linux kernel using GNU filesystem. There is no such thing as a "GNU filesystem", yet.
because I hope Linux would complain if ostype is not set to linux on ext2 filesystems it tries to use as root filesystems. No it shouldn't, it is still ext2. Infact, I often just format all my filesystems with "hurd" as the creator just so that I can use translators where I need them.
